In a standalone Tomcat instance, one can enable
asserts and pass other JVM switches to Tomcat. I
cannot see how this can be done for the embedded
Tomcat.

The current workaround is to edit the Tomcat launcher script.

How does one do this for the built-in Tomcat instance?

The scripts are in <ide_home>/nb4.0/jakarta-tomcat-5.0.28/bin
