Description Jan Lahoda 2004-03-03 10:22:08 UTC
NB200403020736, JDK1.4.2, Solaris&Linux.

In the welcome screen, there are links that open a
browser to view the content.

The problem is that for UNIX, the "mozilla"
browser is chosen by default. If "mozilla" is not
found on the machine, a dialog "Cannot execute
mozilla. Check that a valid external browser
property is set. In the Options window, expand IDE
Configuration. Then expand Server and External
Tool Settings and select Web Browsers" is shown.

I think that this is not appropriate for the
first-time user. I would suppose some dialog would
appear, allowing the user to select browser
according to his/hers needs. This dialog would be
very specialized only for selecting browser for
the first-time user.

There are several reasons why the "mozilla" is not
found:
1. The user uses Netscape, Opera, Firefox, Links
or another browser, not Mozilla.
2. The user simply does have the Mozilla neither
on the PATH nor on the well-known locations.

(Please note that, according to the current
sources, on the GNU/Linux some well-known
locations are checked for Mozilla, but on Solaris,
Mozilla is required to be on the PATH.)

Hi,

please consider this as RFE against external browser module. Welcome
just uses its functionality - so provides url and that's all.

- decreasing priority (feature addresses a linux specific problem; we are already using Desktop API when
running on JVM 6.0 what also tackles this problem)
- we won't have time to implement it for 5.5
