Description _ mihmax 2002-12-06 20:57:41 UTC
Netbeans 3.4.1 Splash is ugly.
I know that, I did it ;-).

Please, provide me with a nice 3.4.1 Splash image,
possibly with "Merak" codename, please.

To get an ugly picture, follow this link:
http://www.netbeans.org/unbranded-source/browse/~checkout~/core/src/org/netbeans/core/resources/splash.gif?rev=1.27.8.3.2.2&content-type=image/gif
Comment 1 Jesse Glick 2002-12-06 21:44:00 UTC
Probably it is actually Leos, not Bruce, who would handle this... Ian?
Comment 2 Bruce Lee 2002-12-06 22:40:29 UTC
I think this is Ian's territory. It might be a good idea to provide a
"beta template" template or specs of some kind to make it easier to
create development screens along the way, and have the visual designer
provide changes when the look of the screen is going to change
significantly.
best,
b.
Comment 3 iformanek 2002-12-09 15:58:53 UTC
Well, this is exactly the reason why the PSD (Photoshop) sources for
the splash screen are available in the graphics repository on
http://ui.netbeans.org/graphics/index.html, so that each time an
update is needed, it does not depend on Sun paying a graphics artist
to update it. There is no problem with us doing it, but it simply does
not feel right. I bet there is someone with good graphics skills in
the community who would be able to do this in Photoshop pretty
quickly. If you won't be able able to find anyone, please ping me, and
I'll provide it.

Regarding the codename in the splash screen, I have mixed emotions
about that. Codename is an internal term used in development to
refrain from using concrete version numbers, I am not sure it should
appear in the final splash screen (However, it is a good idea to do it
on the Beta splashes, I agree).
Comment 4 _ mihmax 2002-12-09 17:37:08 UTC
Actually I don't have photoshop (and it's not freely downloadable, you
know ;-), so please make it for me.

Look at
http://www.netbeans.org/unbranded-source/browse/~checkout~/core/src/org/netbeans/core/resources/splash.gif?rev=1.27.8.3.2.3&content-type=image/gif
I made it from 3.4 Beta.

Maxym, why don't you ask on the mailing lists if anyone can help?

Comment 8 _ mihmax 2002-12-12 11:01:34 UTC
Gremlin, Thank you!
Could you, please, provide your Real Name?

I'd like to ask you to create a splash for IDE that:
1. Is similiar to Netbeans 3.4 splash ;-)
2. Is different to Netbeans 3.4 splash - more bright, not this
cold-blue, but this is IMHO.
3. Codename appearing on the splash is small.

BTW: I don't like the current attachment much :-(:
- too large 3.4.1
- Merak codename is also too bold
Comment 9 iformanek 2002-12-12 15:13:41 UTC
Maxym,
I feel quite strongly that modifying the appearance for a dot-dot
(bugfix) release is not a good idea. For 3.5 or 4.0, it should
definitely be visually different, but for 3.4.1 I would vote for just
modifying the version number.

As I said before, I think that including the code name in the final
splash is somewhat strange (especially since our codenames are not
that cool - and also, since the word has no clear meaning in english,
most people would wander what the hell the word "Merak" on the splash
means :-), but if other people feel there is a benefit in doing so (is
there?), I would not have a problem with it.
Comment 10 Bruce Lee 2002-12-12 16:17:49 UTC
A few comments:
I agree that the overall appearance of the splash shouldn't change for
a dot release. Just change the number in the same size and font as
before.

My opinion: Code names IDs are a big part of some other open source
projects, but they don't provide any information about which is
newest. It's clear that 4.1 is after 3.5, but who can say with project
names like Psyche or Demeter which came first? It's cute but not very
functional, so leave them out.

Ian, maybe the screen template could be available in GIMP format
(because it can include layers for number changes and is free)

Ian: Maybe some brief instructions for changing screens for releases
could be posted with the screen templates.

The screen shouldn't require any new redesign for dot releases, so
this phase shouldn't require a graphic designer.

Big release Splash images should (maybe) change, and it's up to Ian F.
(I think) to manage this. Should it be opened up to the community, or
a visual designer assigned to do it? Ian?

That's all for now.
Comment 11 _ mihmax 2002-12-13 10:51:31 UTC
OK, you convinced me:
only .1 be added to Netbeans 3.4 splash.

BTW: Why 4.0 splash is mostly the same as 3.4 ? ;-)

Comment 14 greencap 2002-12-14 17:53:53 UTC
I have attached 2 images above.
1) Attachment Id: 8337
1) Attachment Id: 8338

The first attachment is an image where I rubbed out the version
number, so that later on u can use this image and paint any other
version number if u want.

The second attachment (Id 8338) is an image where I painted the
version "3.4.1".

These are the following font properties that I used for the version
number

Family: Impact
Type: Regular
Size: 30 pt
Anti-aliasing method: Strong
Color: R=255, G=170, B=0

By the way I am not a graphic expert, but if u want u can always
contact me at the following email address saumendra@canada.com

By the way the second attachment (Id 8338) where I painted the
version "3.4.1" is an image in jpg format.
Do u need it in gif format or what?
I guess I am going to attach another splash image with version 3.4.1
being painted in gif format, just incase u need it.

Comment 18 _ mihmax 2002-12-15 21:42:49 UTC
Ian, Both GremlinX and Saumendra asked me about splash font:

> What font is the netBeans logo written in? With Adobe,
> it treats the text as an object, and so I'm unable to
> get the font type for it.

> If u can tell me what specific font is used to
> display the version number, I can paint the version
> "3.4.1" for u. If it is some special font, I might
> need the font file to be sent to me.

Could you provide a link to font on ui.../graphics/ ?
Comment 19 greencap 2002-12-16 01:41:14 UTC
After the email discussion with Maxym, I found that I
wasn't using the correct font.
Since I couldn't figure out what font is used for the
version number, I grabbed an old splash "3.4 Beta 1",
erased the word "Beta", placed a ".", and shoved the
number "1" right next to it.
I hope this will finally do. And yes.. it is in "gif"
format.

And now for something completely different
Comment 24 GremlinX 2002-12-16 16:24:50 UTC
The above attachment is in Maxym's hints ;) for a 4.0
splash. I was messing around and came up with it. I
decreased the opacity of the back ground, added the nB to
the background, increased the opacity of the former cube
object, and moved it next to the netBeans title. to the
netBeans, I used impact font, with a drop shadow and Bevel
and Emboss. I also did the same to the light blue line
below. I added an outer glow to the 4.0 as well. and to
the background, decrease opacity to 64% (with the white
behind it, it lightened up the whole area).

My attempt at Similar but different.
