When I use Forte with KDE2 and switch to another desktop all windows except the main Forte window are minimized.
When I use with KDE2, window placement is extremely messed up. When starting the top window appears really small and I have to resize myself. Windows are all over the place when they first open and when switching back to the virtual desktop. In short, it does nothing of what it's supposed to.
I'm experiencing the same thing as pozix@home.com under RH7 and Sun JDK 1.3.0_01. Windows appear in random places and sizes.
This bug makes it virtually unusable with Linux, which is extremely unfortunate, because the only practical alternative is to use Netbeans on Windows for which there are many other choices of IDEs. Some of these are arguably better than Netbeans.
I think it is related to the way windows are hidden when the main IDE window is minimized. If there was a way to disable that behaviour then it might work better with KDE2.
After finally setting all of the windows to the way you would like for them to remain upon re-opening, you are surprised to see the newly opened session come up with all different sizes and positions for the windows. I agree, this make netbeans unusable on a linux platform
I can confirm that: 1. the windows are minimized after switching between Workspaces. Only those windows are minimized, which don't have the focus! Except the main window. No solution until now. 2. the window placement is sometimes "extremely messed up". I've set the window manager focus policy to "Click to focus" and disabled all animations and content displaying when moving/ resizing windows. This, and/or deleting the nbuser32 directory (can't remember) solved the problem to me. Looking at this some more. I installed a blank Fedora core 1 system, and did this test and did not see the defect. The system with the defect has KDE 3.2.1 installed and some of the library upgrades involved with that upgrade may have something to do with it. If I run one of my own swing apps with multiple windows I do not see this problem. I will have to go to single window mode for the time being. If anyone at netbeans knows how I can collect some more pertinent info on this drop me a note and I will be happy to do so, but shor of running netbeans in a deubgger I don't know how to persue this for now. wendell nichols
wendell, can you please try with the new nb 3.6 RC1/2? the window system was completely rewritten.
