I installed NetBeans in

/Users/vbk/Desktop/nb50rc1

I could not find a launcher...  so I dug into the installation dir and found

/Users/vbk/Desktop/nb50rc1/Contents/MacOS/netbeans

I started a terminal window and started netbeans using that executable.

It started fine... But WOULD NOT STOP when I hit clover-Q or selected 'Quit
NetBeans' from the NetBeans menu item...

If the installer had done better validation, this would not have happened...

See #71340 for info about ".app" suffix. If NetBeans IDE does not quit as it
should it is not problem of installer. Please get thread dump when IDE hangs and
attach it here so we can find out what problem is.

If you leave .app suffix in installer you will be able to run IDE from Mac
desktop as other Mac apps. You can still use shell script netbeans to start IDE.
(Actually  NetBeans.app contains symbolic link to this shell script to start IDE.)

What is your NB build, OS, current JDK?

seems to be working now..
