In Netbeans 3.6 installer adds a link to uninstall into the start menu right under Netbeans IDE icon. This link is missing since 4.0. I think we should have it in newer version too as most Windows programs put an uninstall link into the start menu. Some users will probably start to search for uninstall here.
Some programs add it to Programs menu some do not. We change it not to add Uninstall item to Programs menu. NetBeans has its item in Add/Remove Programs.
Sorry to bother, but this is a usability issue - see the following report for details: http://ui.netbeans.org/usability/oobe/Report.html Check the part 5 - Uninstallation. Is it really difficult to have the uninstall link in the menu once it exists? Thanks!
Who can decide this issue for 2005? :) It looks like there is no strict convention for Windows apps. Some have Uninstall (or whatever they call it) menu item some do not have it.
Re "most Windows programs put an uninstall link into the start menu". I don't think so. I've just checked the Start menu on my Win XP and found that most menus *didn't put* the Uninstall item there. The standard way of uninstalling programs on Windows is via Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. Windows users are aware of this. We won't provide the Uninstall menu item in NB 4.1. Closing as WONTFIX.
Well, 7 of 8 people missed the uninstall link in the menu during the usability study. So I don't see a point why not to put it there - it can only improve things IMO. Anyway I agree that a lot of programs don't do this and since it is a small issue I will not bother with it anymore, I promis :-) Verified.
