I made the mistake of checking the "Global" check
box in the update installer, so that the profiler
NBM would be installed for all users on my system.
 When NB restarted, it reported a "profiler
installation corrupted" problem, due to a missing
profiler directory in my .netbeans userdir. 
Removing the module and reinstalling without
checking "Global" worked.
