Description ivan 2004-04-02 21:43:07 UTC
My posts to nbdev@netbeans.org take ~ 9 hours
to actually appear on the list.
For example look at how my posts on the thread
	give me "netbeans"
came in way after everyone elses.

This seems to have started when I had my machines
domainname (and hence some of my mailing
addresses) changed. For a while ezmlm would get
bounces from what it was trying to send to me but
I fixed that.

Sounds like the FAQ :

http://www.netbeans.org/kb/faqs/mailing-lists.html#delays

Not sure what you mean by ezmlm getting bounces, but if you've changed
your email address, you'll have to update your subscription/s, otherwise
Ezmlm treats you as a non-subscriber and your posts will be moderated.

Is that the problem ?

ezlml bounces:
	See attachment
I actually kept getting stuff because what ezmlm was getting back
from SUn was a notice, not a real bounce.
I did update my subscriptions so the bounces have stopped.

The delay explanation seems like in the right direction although
I"m at a loss as to why the mail I used for subscribing registered
an address different form the mail I use to post.
First off, how can I find out exactly what address I"m subscribed
under?
Second, does ezmlm use ReplyTo: or From: when registering a
subscriber?
Third, does ezmlml match a posters ReplyTo: or From: in order to
decide if something need be moderated?

RE: bounces - I'm still not clear on what was happening, but if
they've gone away then let's forget about it. They are not related
to the delay (IMO) and are almost certainly transient things related
to your domain name change.

You mentioned in your original report here that your domain name, and
hence email address, recently changed. Often (particularly in big
organisations) such changes happen without the user even knowing about
it.

It's kludgy, but it's the only way we have :
http://www.netbeans.org/community/lists/query.html

> Second, does ezmlm use ReplyTo: or From: when registering a
> subscriber?

I imagine From:, as a (at least partial) security measure;

Likewise, I imagine From:, but I'm not sure.

The moderator mailbox is shared, so if someone else beats me to it I
wont see all mail there. I'll look out for any msgs from you - if I
find one, it will show both which address your msgs are coming from,
and also confirm that that is the reason for the delay.
Comment 5 jcatchpoole 2004-04-07 10:47:07 UTC
Hmm I just went back through the moderator's trash folder, where all
moderated msgs should end up, and found just one msg from you, the
"give me netbeans" msg you mention in your original post. That msg
came From: ivan@djomolungma.sfbay.sun.com, which is probably not the
address you are subscribed under. I'll attach the moderation msg.

Can you keep an eye on your posts, and let me nkow if this delay is
still happeneing, and if so, for which lists ? If you can even be
specific about which msgs that might help.

FYI I just (12:35 GMT) moderated (approved) a msg :

Subject: bad q-build tarfiles?
From: Ivan Soleimanipour <ivan@djomolungma.sfbay.sun.com>
Date: Wed, 7 Apr 2004 16:52:25 -0700 (PDT)
To: nbdev@netbeans.org
Comment 8 ivan 2004-04-08 21:12:35 UTC
Hopefully that will be the lastone.
I subscribed myself as ivan@djomolungma.sfbay.sun.com.
And the test message "subverting the filter" got through quickly.
I'm still subscribed as ivan.soleimanipour@sun.com, so
I'm getting two of everything.

I don't like ivan@djomolungma.sfbay.sun.com ... it exposes an internal
host and login name so I still need to figure if I can
alter my mailers From: field to a canonical address.

Any updates ? If the moderation issue is all that is going on here I
guess this should be closed/invalid or worksforme ... Pls let me know.

Now I know enough to get things to work right.
Thanks.
