I installed an external server. I right-clicked on the server's node in the runtime window and chose Remove. The CPU hit 100% and messages are scrolling like crazy (for several minutes) in the command window. I will attach a log once the scrolling stops.
The log file was huge -- too big to send. Hopefully, here are the important parts, the rest is just pages and pages of repetition. Important note: I reinstalled the external server. This time without a base directory (and without checking the Shared box). It seems to work ok now. So maybe the problem is with base directories.
