Close buttons are drawn on partially hidden tabs
in editor. IMO there shouldn't be a way how to
close something, which is not visible. Better
would be if such tab would change (when reach some
minimum size) to button for shifting tabs. See
screenshot.

This is clearly a bug. Tim, I think you are working on tabs.

Fixed for metal with my integration today; one down, two to go.
