I think, the [usefulness]/[needed work to code] ratio
for this RFE is rather high: add opportunity to close
OutputWindow with Esc. New OW property can be added
("ESC action", for example) with these choices:

- ignore
- close selected view (tab)
- close OW

Unfortunately, I can not realize the RFE myself.

this works in 4.0+ by putting the output window into the side slide bar. It's a
rather general principle and works for any component on the desktop, not just
output window.
