Mailing lists search functionality needs improvement badly, currently it's very difficult to find related info since: 1) search options are poor How do I search for, e.g., all messages related to BOTH 3.4.1 AND debug? [+debug +3.4.1] returns nothing [debug 3.4.1] return everything for debug OR 3.4.1 but I want AND not OR. Google is good example of convinient search style. 2) ability to sort result by date does not exist
The current list archive tool is truly bad. It is provided by SourceCast, the application which hosts nb.org. [ side note : we normally use Google to search web content (temporarily disabled as we give it time to re-index our new design), but Google can't be used to index the list archives as they are dynamically generated. So we are stuck with the SC supplied tool. ] The good news is that many of the problems are reportedly fixed in the next version of SC, which is due very soon (within months I beleive). Item 1) in your report sounds like a duplicate of issue 19996, which is should be fixed in the new version. (For interest here is a selection of other issues that will hopefully be addressed : issue 23420 , issue 20534, issue 19996, issue 9723). Item 2 in your report, date-sortable, is a good suggestion. Assigning this issue to Collab (who provide SC) to consider. Collab - does the new list-archive search utility allow results to be sorted by date ?
Accepting issue & researching. I will update by 5/2. Eric
On a second thought... Why wouldn't you go with web-based forums instead/in addition to the mailing lists? That would be the *best*. I think Jive forums are free for non-profit orgs (or there are some free PHP-based forums, whatever). Mailing lists are very inconvenient, you have to subscribe/unsubscribe, messages are mailed to you every day, 99% of the time I delete them without reading. Very, very bad if you use it just occasionally. Webforums with good search capabilities. Please.
I tested this in a 2.5.0 test environment. It is not sortable by date. I will open an Request for enhancement. Eric
Opened a ER 20473 for the sort by date option. Will update as soon as i get some info from the product management.
Changing defect to enhancement.
Hi! "ability to sort result by date does not exist" Can you explain us more on this? Bcos already the mailing lists search results are sorted by date. Just want to make sure that i exactly understood what you mean here. Thanks, Sripriya.
> Bcos already the mailing lists search results are sorted > by date. No, they are not. Go to http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/SearchList and try a search. Perhaps the URL in the URL field above confused things - that is the list archive, which is sorted by date. But the mailing list search tool does not return results sorted by date.
Agree. Updated this information to the internal issue. Will monitor the internal issue and update as soon as i get the target milestone. -priya.
Update: Setting the status of this issue to Resolved, Fixed. The solution for this issue has a target milestone of "Plan - Truckee3". Action Plan: CollabNet support will review this issue during the upgrade to this release to confirm its resolution. If there are problems with the solution we will reopen this issue. If the solution appears to be working, we will reassign the issue to the original poster, requesting confirmation The original poster can then set the status to "Closed" or "Reopened" if necessary. Next Update: CollabNet support will review this issue during the staging process for the next upgrade. Priya.

Ping. Ideally list archive search results would be sortable by field, as requested in issue 61585. Until that is available, they should be at least *sorted*, by date would make sense. Updating summary to clarify. Updating priority as this is still, after years, a serious and unresolved issue.
> they should be at least *sorted*, by date would make sense. Yes, could someone at least sort the results in descending order, i.e. newest first? Can this be done in less than 2+ years??
Yes, this is already considered for the new Discussion Services that will replace the current architecture of the mailing list. I am told that it should be available for Beta testers (for feedback) within couple of month's time.

The issue has been fixed in CEE 5.0. Support will review it once it has been upgraded to 5.0. Changing the target milestone & marking it as resolved later. Regards, Ramya Support operations
Hi This feature is fixed in Rubicon and I have verified the same on a test box carrying the latest version. I shall close this case for now. Please feel free to re-open, if the functionality does not satisfy your expectation when site gets upgraded to Rubicon version of CEE. Regards, Vathsan Support Operations.
Re-opening this issue to mark as FIXED.
Marking this issue as FIXED.
This still works truly bad Here is what you do to make this issue happen: 1. Go to mailing lists 2. Select Search mailing list archive http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/SearchList?listName=nbusers&by=date 3. search for anything, as an example you could try to search for "debug java", it gives you some strange date sorting.. Your results comes up in some random order, sometimes with some stuff from year 2001 at the top. Personal opinion and suggestions: When the results are displayed After your search operation it would be nice to have ability to click the subjects at the top to change search order by interest. (Subject, Posted by, Posted at) Search with Boolean logic also would be a nice feature to implement I think.
svejan, you are absolutely right, however CollabNet (who host and maintain the application that runs the netbeans.org site) have a policy of closing issues once they are fixed in a future version of the application. This issue is fixed, apparently, in a future release, which we will upgrade to sometime in the future. Until then we are stuck with the current, broken, version. I would suggest instead using a site like Markmail : http://netbeans.markmail.org/ for list browsing. Closing as fixed, according to Collab's policy.
Ok, I see! Let's hope the changes will occur in the future then. Thank's for the Markmail link!
We recently moved out from Collabnet's infrastructure
