Why that ? Specifically, I think '/' on Unix and '\' and ':' on Windows should be allowed, and should be interpreted as one would expect. So, if I type c:\folder1\folder2, then folder1 under c:\ and folder2 under c:\folder1 should be created. Also, this would be consistent with the behavior of creation of new Java packages, where you can also create package com.foo.bar.
OK, '\' and '/' make sense (and it works in some cases - New folder) when it's interpreted as you described but what about case as in #31484 - This one should not be allowed.
FWIW, this is also platform-specific - for example, VMS has special uses for [ and ]...
No changes planned to 3.6.
