It could be worth to try to support zipped tar
archives as well.

I don't think this makes sense - there is no random access for
compressed TAR archives. You would have to hold the whole thing in
memory. It would be really slow, users would be better off unpacking
the archive IMHO.

Anyway somebody can develop a module to cover it, its not openide's
responsibility.
