Try to install Dark Theme and start debug session => you will see bad colors, like

Evaluation shown that the problem is the following:
- Dark Theme by default switches Fonts & Colors scheme to Norway Today, but bg colors assigned in Annotations tab are not auto-applied
So, this bad colors

Workaround is switch to another Scheme, Apply, Switch to Norway Today and Apply again

Btw, there is also mentioned NPE

But may be it was fixed after 8.1. Beta (which was used to produce NPE)
