1) Go to Project Properties, Build->Linker->Output
2) Specify path to directory (existing or not)

Text in a description says:
"Name of output file or output directory"

If path to existing directory was specified -- make error occurs.
Otherwise file is created instead of dir.

Solution: Fix description text or allow to specify dir name.
