If 'Show Versioning Labels' is enabled, the status labels are displayed within the 'Projects' and 'Files' views and within the tab when a file is opened.

Because the label can take a lot of horizontal space and by that take the space of displayed tabs, it should be removed from there and maybe instead put into the tooltip for the tab.
Or, if is not wanted to remove the labels from the tabs, there could be an option (e.g. under Tools > Options > Team > <VCS> > <VCS> Status Labels) to toggle their display.
