Product Version = NetBeans IDE 8.0 (Build 201403101706) Operating System = Linux version 3.11.0-12-generic running on amd64 Java; VM; Vendor = 1.7.0_25 Runtime = OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM 23.7-b01 Good morning/afternoon, I installed NetBeans IDE 8.0 (HTML5 & PHP bundle) a few days ago on the Linux Mint 16 KDE operating system and I'm just starting to go through the tutorials. The Embedded WebKit Browser is not available as an option to choose for the Browser. I don't know if it's related but in the Installed Plugins there is an item called "Embedded Browser UI - JavaFX WebView" which can't be selected. It has the following description. Version: 1.10.1.1.1 Source: NetBeans IDE 8.0 (Build 201403101706) Plugin Description Embedded browser implementation based on WebView node from JavaFX runtime. There are 2 other plugins which also can't be selected. These are the following. TestNG Version: 1.10.1 Source: NetBeans IDE 8.0 (Build 201403101706) Plugin Description Includes the TestNG testing library. RCP Platform Version: 1.25.1 Source: NetBeans IDE 8.0 (Build 201403101706) Plugin Description The NetBeans RCP Platform is a generic framework for Swing applications. Please try running with the latest version of Oracle JDK and reopen if the problem is still reproducible. Also check your system configuration here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javafx/downloads/supportedconfigurations-1506746.html

> Please try running with the latest version of Oracle JDK and reopen if the problem is still reproducible. > Also check your system configuration here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javafx/downloads/supportedconfigurations-1506746.html I downloaded jdk-8u5-linux-x64.tar.gz The instructions at http://docs.oracle.com/javase/8/docs/technotes/guides/install/linux_jdk.html#BJFJJEFG appear to be inadequate. If I use tar zxvf jdk-8u5-linux-x64.tar.gz, the files are extracted but that is all that appears to happen. If I use % tar zxvf jdk-8u5-linux-x64.tar.gz, I get the message "bash: fg: %: no such job". Please provide accurate and clear instructions on how to install the software on my PC. Thank you, Michael Holberton.
I followed the instructions at the following page but now NetBeans will not start. http://www.wikihow.com/Install-Oracle-Java-JDK-on-Ubuntu-Linux Please provide accurate and clear instructions on how to install/repair the software on my PC. Also, do not mark the Status as Closed or Resolved unless I have indicated that NetBeans is functioning correctly. Really, it should be my task to do this. Also, how does one activate the Java Control Panel? Thank you, Michael Holberton.
I altered the netbeans.conf to point to the new JDK, as below, but NetBeans still does not start. netbeans_jdkhome="/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-gcj-4.8-amd64/jre"
(In reply to mtbvfr from comment #7) > netbeans_jdkhome="/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-gcj-4.8-amd64/jre" Doesn't look like a path to JDK, try one the NetBeans/JDK bundles if you have problems setting it up: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk-7-netbeans-download-432126.html

An End-User of the NetBeans products should be able to expect detailed and accurate answers from the people assigned to the task of solving problems with the products. So, unfortunately, I had to spend my own time to resolve the problem which I hope others can benefit from. The use of the update-alternatives commands, listed in the installation instructions on the previously mentioned web page, created the directory "java-1.5.0-gcj-4.8-amd64" along with the directories named "java-1.5.0-gcj", "java-gcj" and "java-gcj-4.8". I initially used the "java-1.5.0-gcj-4.8-amd64" sub-directory for the netbeans_jdkhome property because the naming convention appeared similar to that (java-7-openjdk-amd64) which was used when the NetBeans IDE was installed. I changed the netbeans.conf file to use netbeans_jdkhome="/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.8.0_05/jre" and now the IDE opens and the Embedded WebKit Browser is now an option in the list of available browsers. Now the Task can be given the status of RESOLVED.
