When working in the GridBagLayout designer you cannot edit the properties of an individual component. 

As an example editing the preferredSize of a component has a direct impact on what appears on the GridBagLayout Designer form.
Another commonly used example would be the text of a label or Textfield.

However I don't see any reason why all other properties shouldn't be viewable/editable from the designer
