I found useful the project explorer to offer a quick shortcut to open a file in the OS native file browser, and also a shortcut to compress the file in some of the most popular formats like zip, gzip, tar.gz and bz2.

In my case it would be very helpful when developing PHP Joomla! extensions which need to be compressed and uploaded to a server, or locating a file in the filesystem when needed.

Use the plugin http://plugins.netbeans.org/plugin/43217/quickopener which can open the file browser and you can also configure custom actions there.
