[ JDK VERSION : 1.6.18 ]

- have following files in same folder:
-- out.txt
-- out2.txt
-- out3.txt
-- out4.txt
- delete out2.txt:
-- out.txt
-- out3.txt
-- out4.txt
- rename out3.txt to out2.txt:
-- out.txt
-- out2.txt
-- out3.txt
-- out4.txt
--> now 4 files are listed, but only 3 are existing

note: I had a diff view open: out.txt <-> out3.txt (or maybe out2.txt)

I just tried it. Everything seems to be OK. I see just three files after rename of out3.txt to out2.txt.
