1. Launch installation (double-click on netbeans-6.5-ml-java-windows.exe file). 2. Install window opens. 3. Do not remember at which exact step (certainly early in the process of installation), install process hangs. More specificly, after few minutes of no obvious signs of any install activity being performed (e.g. no HD access), I cancel installation (click on Cancel button). 4. Install window still hangs; this time does not even refresh GUI. 5. Few minutes later, I manually terminate process from Task Manager. 6. Subsequent attempts to launch installer result in "NetBeans Installer is already running" message. 7. I restart machine. Subsequent attempts to launch installer still result in "NetBeans Installer is already running" message. 8. I do not try to "start another instance of the installer". As a result, I cannot install NetBeans. How do I get rid of previous installer instance?

Just click "Yes" in the "... start another instance" dialog or remove %USERPROFILE%/.nbi/.nbilock. Regarding possible reasons of the hang see http://www.netbeans.org/community/releases/65/relnotes.html#known_issues-installer Search for "The NetBeans IDE 6.5 installation wizard does not start properly (hangs)".
