Hi
A lot of editors offer what is sometimes referred to as rectangular selection, block selection, or vertical selection.
For the netbeans editor, there is an extension available, but it cannot be installed properly and is said to be hard to
use. I wish that feature could be implemented in future versions of the netbeans editor.

This is rather enhancement than a defect

There is a plugin that provides these features, see issue #13857 for details.
