[dev aug 27] With or without -J-Dnetbeans.popup.linuxhack=true, no popup menus in the IDE work; neither Explorer context menus, frame or top-component tab menus, editor context menus, etc. They appear and look fine, and the first item is drawn selected, but moving the mouse does not change the selection or permit items to be chosen. Clicking on a menu item (whether the first and selected one, or a subsequent and unselected one) simply closes the menu. Keyboard navigation of all but the editor context menu works fine. For main menus, the menu can be posted with a single mouse click, but is then unusable as for context menus; if the mouse button is not released but the mouse is dragged, the menu works normally. Dropdown lists in e.g. boolean property editors are similarly unresponsive to mouse movement. The IDE is practically unusable; [dev aug 23] does not exhibit the problem. Linux 2.2.12, JDK 1.3.1, Gnome + Enlightenment.
