Description petrar2 2008-04-20 19:00:31 UTC
I tried to get through the testing tutorial Quickstart (http://www.netbeans.org/kb/60/java/quickstart.html) with my
monitor turned off and mouse unplugged.
Even if there is said that this tutorial should take about 10 minutes, I spent an hour in front of my computer and
almost lost my nerves. It is true that people habituated on commnucation just with voice should be more effecient than
me. During this short tutorial I found some problems which caused me troubles:
1. Menu communication is not so good.
Maybe this was just problem with my version but sometimes selected items in menu didn't correspond with voice
description. Instead of the first item in list such as "new project" JAWS told me nothing or something another which
confused me.
2. No labels when using shortcuts
For example I used ctrl+G shortcut to jump on the line when there was an error in application according to ouput
console. JAWS confirmed me using this shortcut but didn't tell me I am at "Go to line" mode.
3. Using alt+space help
I didn't found out how to use this type of help. Even if used the right shortcut, JAWS didn't offered me list of options
which were for me invisible and that means usefull.

At the end I have to say that even if there is somethimes a bug, it brigns opportunities for blind people to take a part
in activities such as programming is.

1.JAWS reads correctly the position in the window (e.g. following steps):
-pushing alt to go to main menu (Jaws reads 'Menu Bar; File; To navigate press left and right arrow; F)
-push arrow down to select the first available item (JAWS read 'Menu; New Project...; W; Shift+Control+N; Menu; To move through items press up and
down arrow')
2.'Go to line' dialog is really weird. Jaws cannot read the dialog even if INSERT+B is invoked to read the dialog. I am passing to editor for evaluation - I don't
know whether implementation of this dialog is common or somehow special.
3.Alt followed by Space reads correctly the menu item.

Conclusion from evaluation:
Only point 2 is the valid issue. I will change subject and passing to editor.

Thanks, we will have a look. It would help us to know how to install/setup JAWS (preferably on linux). I for example
have never used screen reading software before. Thanks

Jaro, could you please provide some advise? Thanks.
Comment 4 Jaromir Uhrik 2009-01-08 12:19:19 UTC
Guys the full name for JAWS screen reader is JAWS® for Windows® and it cannot be installed on Linux - google will help
you how to install on Windows. On Linux we have different screen readers (Orca), but this issue references JAWS.
Comment 5 Sergey Petrov 2009-04-24 09:08:26 UTC
Is it reproducible with Orca?
Comment 6 Sergey Petrov 2009-04-24 09:45:53 UTC
will look if will be able to setup jaws om my desktop.
Comment 7 Sergey Petrov 2009-04-27 08:55:50 UTC
tried with jaws 10, accessible bridge 2.01, java 6, 6.7m3 java se.
was able to reproduce the issue in most cases, sometimes dialog was read.
not sure if will have enough time to debug with jaws demo.
Comment 8 Sergey Petrov 2009-04-27 14:18:33 UTC
switched to java 5 and have the same,
reproducible with Go To FIle (alt-shif-o), replace (ctrl-h), go to symbol (ctrl-shift-alt-o) if invoked at empty space.
have workaround - press tab, insert-b - dialog will be recognized and read by jaws
Comment 9 Sergey Petrov 2009-04-27 15:31:43 UTC
finally I'm not able to reproduce neither with locally build latest code nor with downloaded full 090427 build.
not sure if anything was changed in windows manager so mark as incomplete for now before anybody else will be able to
verify too.
Comment 10 Jiri Prox 2009-08-18 16:30:11 UTC
So is this issue still valid?
Comment 11 Peter Pis 2009-10-19 08:31:17 UTC
Without requested information for long time - INVALID. We can't do anything in this case. Reporter, please add requested
