Description peterp 2001-06-25 13:16:49 UTC
When you search for 'FilterEnumeration.java:79' on www.netbeans.org, you
receive no results while this string occurs i.e. on page
http://www.netbeans.org/www-nbdev/msg04846.html. Where is the problem?
Comment 1 Taska 2001-06-25 15:30:25 UTC
Assigning to support.
Comment 2 Taska 2001-06-25 15:39:56 UTC
Accepting.
Internal CollabNet issue SC80.
Comment 3 Taska 2001-06-25 22:52:51 UTC
Second Internal CollabNet issue PCN4713.
Comment 4 Taska 2001-06-25 23:21:30 UTC
The mailing-list-archive search mechanism is going to be changing with the new
inst (next week), so I am closing this issue wontfix.
Comment 5 peterp 2001-07-09 15:58:18 UTC
Issue not fixed with new inst.
Comment 6 Taska 2001-07-09 18:30:51 UTC
accepting for support.
Comment 8 jcatchpoole 2001-07-10 15:02:11 UTC
The report was about the search, not specifically where this
msg is. Previously searching on this keyword did not turn up
any hits whereas it is clearly in the archives.

However Peter the search does now seem to work. Go to
http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/SearchList?listName=nbdev&by=thread
and search for FilterEnumeration in messagae bodies, you will find
many hits. However a search for the full "FilterEnumeration.java:79"
does not find anything, I guess this is something to do with how
the search engine interprets ":" and "." ?
Comment 9 peterp 2001-07-10 15:27:10 UTC
Thanks guys. Is there any way to search through messages containing given string when I open
www.netbeans.org and enter string into Search field (on the left)? By now it seems to me search is
divided to:
1) website content
2) discussions.
Could these be joined?
Comment 10 jcatchpoole 2001-07-10 17:00:24 UTC
I requested this in
http://openide.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=9721

Failing that I will improve search links on site to make
it clear that you need to do seperate searches.
Comment 11 Taska 2001-07-10 18:25:27 UTC
Sorry about the lack of clarity. I entered the URL above in the
process of further testing. This issue is not closed.
Comment 12 Taska 2001-07-14 01:23:53 UTC
Moving this to P3 (not a regression).
Comment 13 jcatchpoole 2001-07-18 18:29:02 UTC
Added a search page which makes it clear that searching twice
(website content, and mailing list archives) is really necessary
atm. Ideally these would be merged.

See http://www.netbeans.org/search.html

I will replace the current search box in the navbar with a link
to this page.
Comment 14 Taska 2001-09-08 01:10:31 UTC
The problem appears to be with non-alphanumeric characters in
searches. Adjusting summary.

Comment 21 pgodeau 2002-06-27 16:46:22 UTC
I try to search for a subject related to "1.4" and it doesn't work.
I don't know if it's the same bug but I mention this.
Comment 22 kat 2002-06-27 19:51:34 UTC
It's the same issue, the period is what is causing the trouble.
The fix to address this issue looks to be on track for version 2.0 at
this point.
Comment 23 Marek Grummich 2002-07-19 16:22:56 UTC
Target milestone was changed from not determined to TBD
Comment 24 Unknown 2002-08-21 01:56:43 UTC
This has been assigned to Truckee1. During the upgrade
to that release we can verify or reopen if necessary.

Search Mailing List facility doesn't allow to search for non-ASCII symbols in
the bodies of the messages.

Even more complex...

At least I tried searching nbdiscuss_fr:
1. "intéresse" returns 3 results,
   but doesn't return this page:
http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?listName=nbdiscuss_fr&msgId=607331

2. "francisée" returns 0 results,
   nowever there's:
http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?listName=nbdiscuss_fr&msgId=480699

But French people are not hopeless, not ALL of their words are not-ASCII (like
in Russian).

Try google - if you ask it for "intéresse", it returns pages with interesse,
intéressé and Intéressé etc.

Comment 29 jcatchpoole 2005-08-29 12:13:04 UTC
3mths and no update. The issue is over 4 years old. Searching by author fails
if you use a "@".
Comment 30 Unknown 2005-08-30 22:07:48 UTC
Jack, The enhancement for consistent searchability across CEE is pushed back
(rather considered) for Hudson. Although I see definitely some improvements in
Danube, the core functionality of searchability with special characters may
not be fully resolved.

I wasn't sure about the "search by author". Please point me to a web-link/URL
and I will try to test this in a Danube box.
Comment 31 Unknown 2006-05-25 00:31:07 UTC
Marking this as RESOLVED->REMIND.
Comment 32 Unknown 2007-04-17 10:53:37 UTC

Changing the status
Comment 34 Unknown 2009-01-22 12:25:59 UTC
Support is re-opening the issue to validate on the effort required in completing this in a future release.

AFAIK, this seems to be huge effort.

Does netbeans.org require this search since markmail.org is being used for searching archives?
Comment 35 jcatchpoole 2009-01-23 00:47:11 UTC
You're right, after 7 years I guess users have been driven away by now. We'll attempt to mask CEE's broken list
archives and search completely by using Markmail instead.
Comment 36 Marian Mirilovic 2009-11-08 02:27:44 UTC
We recently moved out from Collabnet's infrastructure
