When you go to Tools -> Plugins -> Available Plugins in NetBeans or in a NetBeans-branded application, there is a "Source" column along with "install", "Name" and "Category". The default value for modules that are not developed by the NetBeans open source community is "Community Contributed Plugin" with a two green men logo. Modules developed by NetBeans are marked as NetBeans, and if in Beta, they are marked as Beta. It would be probably good if also external module developers were able to change that field and logo for their modules, because "Community Contributed Plugin" does not mean a whole lot, or it could even be deceiving. If "Source" were possible to brand, it would be more clear where that module is coming from, from what company, even by just looking at the logo. In the old Update Center, it used to be more clear where modules were coming from, because they were categorized under folders and different Update Centers. Now they are all listed in the same set, making difficult to identify who the developer source is.
I think a plugin can tell more about itself, like: Version: 1.4 Author: Milos Kleint, Michael Koelling, Ian Utting Date: 10/15/08 Source: BlueJ Update Center Homepage: http://bluej.org/netbeans/ It is intentional to use only limited set of icons in the table to make it plain. It's not in our plans for a long time to change it. IMHO I should close as WONTFIX.
