Description Karthikeyan Rajeswaran 2007-08-22 02:20:43 UTC
The Update Center Content Inspector at http://www.netbeans.info/uc/show_uc_content.html lets us select NetBeans version
and Update Center Type using comboboxes.

I would like to request that the list of centers be made a table (with columns for version and type) and the cells can
be links to the content inspector for that version/type. I think such a user interface would also serve as a
documentation on available centers.

A couple of related requests/thoughts:
- The Content Inspector does not include the update centers for 55 and 551 packs.
- Staging vs Production selection can be provided merely by changing www to testwww urls.
- A similar inspector could be written for the China AU update centers. It may not be possible to make these links, but
it would serve a documentation on the centers/urls created on China AU server.

Suggested change in UI

Sorry Karthik, I don't like your proposal since it looks very confusing to me. I would like to preserve the "combobox
style". If you provide me with the list of "pack specific" URLs that should be added I will consider addition of
"Feature set:" option. In addition to that I see no point in adding "Use staging server" checkbox - why should somebody
be interested in accessing staging area? It would be primarily for Sun folks and I think it's not worth confusing our
vast majority of typical users of this inspector app.

I do agree that combo boxes are less cluttered than tables and are probably the better UI.

I see your point. I suggested it merely because it is very simple to implement since all it involves is adding 'test' to
www.netbeans... URL string. I am not sure it would be primarily for Sun folks, because external vendors too make
requests for publishing plugins on the update center and (if I am understanding correctly) they do go through the
staging process. In any case, there is nothing secretive about the staging center. And as such, i think, the stress
should be on 'why not expose the process' rather than 'why'. Having said that, i do agree it may not buy us much.

My request was really for an external page that acts as a catalogue of available update centers (and thought the
inspector could also act as one), including ChinaAU update centers.
As of today,
a) netbeans.org/updates URL does not support directory browsing, which means unless the URL is known, it is not possible
to get to available centers.
b) The IDE (until 5.5.1), shows the URL defined in terms of variables like autoupdate.version making it hard to figure
out the URL. (In NB6M10, the actual URL, with variables expanded to their value is shown; which may of course change in
the final version..)
I will think some more about it and create a different RFE (or reopen this).

Please go ahead and close this as resolved/wontfix.

Although it is absolutely NO work to add one checkbox and insert "test" if checked I don't want to do that. At least
until the appropriate wiki FAQ [1] proves to be worse. If you come up with a better idea of how to present other Update
Centers and which ones, don't hesitate to file new issue. Meanwhile I close this issue as won't fix.
