Description Peter Lam 2007-04-19 22:15:34 UTC
The new NB 6 Plugin Manager has no way of seleting the top or umbrella module to
include all submodules to be installed (New Plugin tab) or uninstalled
(Installed tab), eg, UML feature or module has 18 submodules which requires each
submodule check-box to be manually selected. This is a big usability issue.
Since this a new feature replacing the original Module Manager in NB 5, it has
to be better and easier to use but rather it's harder to use.
Comment 1 Peter Lam 2007-04-19 22:18:23 UTC
This is the same issue if one ones to activate or deactivate the whole feature,
one has to manually do it for each submodule.
Comment 2 Jiri Kovalsky 2007-04-20 13:41:28 UTC
This sounds like a problem in Plugin Manager not Auto Update Center. Could you
please Jirko evaluate this P1 defect?
Comment 3 Jiri Rechtacek 2007-04-20 14:05:15 UTC
I really don't think it's M9 stopper. I can install a umbrella module if all its
dependencies cover whole category, see Ruby for example. The umbrella module
should be in Feature display-category in its manifest. This part works for me.

Marian, please comment. Does it fit the rules for M9 stoppers?

It's a design decision to don't uninstall/deactivate categories. But the Plugin
Manager should solve it. The concept of new Autoupdate aka Plugin Manager takes
care of grouping more modules in 'aggregate' units which are presented in UI to
users. This feature will be promoted in a next NB6 milestone after M9. It's
already tracked as issue 100834.

Definitely not, this is not a preview stopper. I agree with Jirka, as he said
some work on the grouping modules has to be done, but not for M9.
Comment 5 Peter Lam 2007-04-23 19:43:04 UTC
I agree that this is not a M9 stopper but I would view it as a regression
instead, because this feature was there in the old feature which is not there in
the new ore replacement feature. It's a tedious thing to manually selecting 18
UML submodules in order disable the UML feature for example.
