Support for ClearCase. This is a high-level umbrella issue for the purpose of 6.0 planning. Do not close until all changes are integrated.
Reassigning to "versioncontrol".
doesn't fit into 6.0 anymore. TM = future to put this on the deferred list
If at all possible, bringing ClearCase support more inline with what is present for SVN, Mercurial, etc, would be very much appreciated. Support is a must, though.
P.S. Not having ClearCase support in 6.0 will be a strong argument in our organization that everyone must switch to Eclipse!
How I can help?
will not be in 6.0, but we should be able to do it afterwards. perhaps as something light for dev / 6.0 update centers first, then full support as a part of std. build in the following release. Similar as we did for Subversion.
FWIW, this is the one issue that keeps me from being able to use Netbeans at work more than anything else...probably everything else combined. Netbeans 6.0 seems to be at a point where it can do everything well enough (and often times better) for me to do my work if it just had Clearcase support. If there is anything I can do (test a prototype, etc.) please let me know.
>>If there is anything I can do (test a prototype, etc.) please let me know thanks. I'll let you know when we have a prototype available.
I'm a big NetBeans supporter at my company; however, version control runs completely on ClearCase. I don't think I'd be able to recommend NetBeans to too many people if NetBeans doesn't support CC. Eclipse has been ahead on that front already; the NB 5.5 CC support hasn't been stellar but bearable.
Just thought I'd add a vote and comment. I'm a consultant and frequently work for clients that use ClearCase, including my current project. Without this feature, I won't use NB6 to work on their projects nor will I be able to recommend that their developers use it.
Any update on this? Beta 2 has been out for a while and I still haven't heard anything more on this. It truly is a "show stopper" for many folks.
There's a skeleton of a new-style version control module for NetBeans in CVS, but I don't see evidence of anyone working on it. As someone with no experience working with NetBeans modules other than to tweak and rebuild one of the external ones (the non-netbeans.org "explore from here" to make it run with NB 6), I tried to work on this skeleton. For some reason, however, this module is considered part of NetBeans itself from a build perspective and requires that you download and build all of NetBeans to even open the project in NetBeans! I did all that and still couldn't get the thing to build. In short: * There's no sign of activity -- at least towards a new-style version control module (and I'm tired of having to cobble back to an old generic VCS module on life support even if it worked). * The skeleton that is there is sufficiently hard to approach that I'd be surprised to see any ClearCase users flesh it out themselves. I'd love to be proven wrong on both of these counts -- even though the latter means I'm just too much of a weanie to figure out the NB build stuff.
Here's the (depressing) quote from "Ask the Experts: NetBeans IDE 6.0" at http://java.sun.com/developer/community/askxprt/2007/jl1022.html Q: I'm trying to show NB to my boss and my development team in order to move from JBuilder and Eclipse to NB, obviously. ;-) One reason they say to avoid migration is NB slowness (start-up time but mainly other operations while running). I notice that ZIP formats are a bit faster than installation ones... Will there will be some improvements in NB speed.up? :-) (Anyway, I love it!) The biggest resistance to migrate is ClearCase (unfortunately we are using it). When will a ClearCase plugin be ready? A: Thanks for your questions regarding NetBeans and trying to move your boss and the development team to NetBeans. I want to answer both of the points you make. We are actively addressing the performance issues you mention and I expect you will see improvement with the final release of NetBeans 6. In addition, we are working on a ClearCase plug-in and plan to release it after the NetBeans 6 release, hopefully around the JavaOne 2008 timeframe. Keep using NetBeans and let us know if there are any other issues we need to address to increase migration/adoption.
A netbeans FAQ describes a workaround for using ClearCase with 6.0 by using VCSGeneric. http://wiki.netbeans.org/wiki/view/FaqVSSProfile
We have just announced the release of early access clearcase module. For more information check out the home page at http://versioncontrol.netbeans.org/clearcase/
Clearcase module will be (is) available on the 6.1 stable AUC.
