Sounds like a great way to resolve the tab vs spaces issue once and for all. Would be fantastic if we could 
move fast and do this in netbeans.

Swing already supports elastic tabstops: see the source code zipped in the demo found here <http://nickgravgaard.com/elastic-tabstops/ETDemo.jar>.
