In NetBeans 8.x.x the Maven Indexing seems to last forever. 

It seems to index central, sonatype and doesn't stop.

I tried set Tools > Options > Java > Maven > Index > Index Update Frequency > 'Never'

But the index task still appears sometimes at the bottom of the IDE

did you try out a build created after #239915 was fixed?
