The same thing is also occurred when new category and new item is created in HTML palette. This may be problem of HTML palette.

my steps:

1. open html file.
2. open palette window
3. right-click palette window then create a new category (e.g. MyHTML)
4. select proper area in html editor
5. drag & drop it to MyHTML (create a new item : my_snippet)
6. drag & drop my_snippet to html editor
7. caret disappear

my environment:

Product Version: NetBeans IDE 8.0 (Build 201403101706)
