Hi Angelo,
the only "surefire" way of handling this would be to tell the user that the OOME has occured and ask him if she wants to report it on next start of the IDE (because the OOME has probably already corrupted the current instance of the ide and it needs to be restarted anyway). If so the Ide would save all the information including the heapdump and send the report on next startup of the ide. This way of reporting OOME's will probably be implemented in next release.

regards

Petr C.

Indeed I have never been able to send such reports whne an OOME occurs.
I guess this is one more problem but I think it is very much worth to fix it so that it is possible to send reports in this case.

The exact process is following:

when OOME occurs normal "exception occurred" bubble pops up in lower right corner of the ide. User than has the opportunity to report this exception in the same way as any other. If he does so the heapdump is uploaded along with the report - you can see the progress of the upload of the heap dump in the status bar - "uploading logs".

But because this operation also needs some memory and the IDE is memory-starved this upload is successfully completed only in some cases - in others it is interrupted by another OOME and the exceptuion report is not created.

The heapdump is saved as $netbeans.user.dir/var/log/heapdump.hprof and even if the upload process is interrupted and ER is not created user can still create an issue and upload the heap dump from there.

Hope this helps

That's great, but do you mean then that they are sent without telling the user?

No.

When OutOfMemoryError occurs IDE automatically sends report already now. See for example here:

Hope this helps,

Are you sure?

In my case it continues to work but it has a notification that shows as
a circled cross in the status bar?

I can continue my work but NetBeans gets more and more sluggish.

Therefore it seems reasonable to ask NetBeans to assemble a bug report
in that case.

So, would it be possible to have the automatic bug report submission
for this out of memory error?

That's right but I am no slave.
In addition, I think that if dev starts receiving numerous and
consistent reports that automatically contain relevant data they will
see there is an issue out there.

I agree about being time consuming some times, but that’s our job as

I regularly getjava.lang.OutOfMemoryError

With 7.3 Beta seems to be much more serious.

Would it be possible to trap the exception and have the automatic
sending of a bug report as it already happens for other issues?

Opening bugs is very time consuming.

Thanks,
Angelo

Increasing heap size did the trick in my case. See #219695
<http://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=219695>.

I started IDE using default settings which led to out of memory
exception and crash twice. In the second attempt I manage to create
thread and heap dumps just moments before crash (attached to #219695
