The default installation of Java on linux is the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and it is the OpenJava installation. What you need is the Java Development Kit (JDK). If you download and install the Linux version of the JDK from www.oracle.com, you'll be good to go. On the JDK download page, you can usually find an installation of the latest version of Netbeans which includes installing the JDK as well. Those combined installs should be the most fool proof.
