Just for completeness sake, I figure I'd mention that symlinks by themselves didn't do the trick because the default "clean" target removes the build directory (i.e. the symlink) itself. Overriding the "-do-clean" target in build.xml to not remove the directory itself did the trick:

    <target depends="init" name="-do-clean">
                <delete includeEmptyDirs="true">
                        <fileset dir="${build.dir}" includes="**/*"
defaultexcludes="no"/>
                </delete>
<delete dir="${dist.dir}" followsymlinks="false" includeemptydirs="true"/>
    </target>

If there's a more elegant way, I couldn't think of it (perhaps playing with the ownership/permission of the symlink?)

... that's why I said that working with plain links is not enough with the build. Did you try to just set build.dir and dist.dir to a completely different value? I mean, not using the project basedir, but pointing to the RAM disk folder?
