Just for completeness sake, I figure I'd mention that symlinks by themselves 
didn't do the trick because the default "clean" target removes the build 
directory (i.e. the symlink) itself.  Overriding the "-do-clean" target in 
build.xml to not remove the directory itself did the trick:

    <target depends="init" name="-do-clean">
                <delete includeEmptyDirs="true">
                        <fileset dir="${build.dir}" includes="**/*" 
defaultexcludes="no"/>
                </delete>
        <delete dir="${dist.dir}" followsymlinks="false" 
includeemptydirs="true"/>
    </target>

If there's a more elegant way, I couldn't think of it (perhaps playing with 
the ownership/permission of the symlink?)
