I've read and coded this tutorial.  Maybe I am missing something.  This
creates a listener for the topcomponent selected.  In my case the
topcomponent may never be selected, so adding a listener doesn't seem be what
I need.  I could be wrong.

So how do I get the instance of the topcomponent?  In a C++ Paradigm I would
have the parent send the instance to the child that needed it but this
tightly couples them.
