hello! First, thanks to everyone for the help they have given me. Even if i
dont understand absolutely everything you have said i get the majority of it
^_^

ok, i tried to copy the same thing the guide had done and ive used your
ideas, heres my code:

/*
 * To change this template, choose Tools | Templates
 * and open the template in the editor.
 */
package senior.project;
import java.applet.*;
import java.awt.*;
/**
 *
 * @author Talon
 */
public class SeniorProject {

    /**
     * @param args the command line arguments
     */
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    public void paint(Graphics g); "ILLEGAL START OF EXPRESSION. MISSING
METHOD BODY OR DECLARE ABSTRACT"
{
    g.drawString("Hello World!", 50, 25); "CANNOT FIND SYMBOL. SYMBOL g"
}
    }
} "CLASS,INTERFACE, OR ENUM EXPECTED"

so, there is a red exclamation by each of those bolded sections stating what
i have written in quotations.

maybe i should start over, I am trying to learn how to program a basic game (
its turning out to not be so basic... ) kind of like NetHack. For now all im
trying to learn is how to make graphics appear, move the character, have the
screen move with the character ( perhaps when they exit a room it will slide
the screen over to the next? ) and whatnot.

Anybody have any tips? Im still using that website i mentioned above and i
know im on the general right track, but i just feel lost as i dont have
anyone in person to help me out.

any help is MUCH appreciated, and thanks very much for everything so far!
