Xenia, I also have XP.

Could not reproduce on:

Product Version: NetBeans IDE 7.2.1 (Build 201210100934)
Java: 1.6.0_32; Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM 20.7-b02
System: Windows XP version 5.1 running on x86; Cp1252; en_US (nb)
User directory: C:\Documents and Settings\someuser\Application Data\NetBeans\7.2.1

Yes, that's identical to your environment, I double checked. Could not reproduce

So it’s either XP or my older version of Java …

Xenia,

What's your environment?
I tried to reproduce that on my environment. It works with no problems.

Product Version: NetBeans IDE 7.2.1 (Build 201210100934)

Java: 1.7.0; Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM 21.0-b17

System: Windows 7 version 6.1 running on x86; Cp1252; en_US (nb)

User directory: C:\Users\someuser\AppData\Roaming\NetBeans\7.2.1

Netbeans installed under c:\Program Files\NetBeans 7.2.1\

The corresponding registry entries:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\netbeans.exe\shell\open\command

Name                                      Data

(Default)                                   "C:\Program Files\NetBeans 7.2.1\bin\netbeans.exe" "%1"

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.php\OpenWithList:

Name                                      Data

(Default)                                  (not set)

a                                             netbeans.exe

MRUList                                  a

Well, sure, why not? OK, this is interesting:

I uninstalled 7.2 and reinstalled 7.2.1. Didn’t touch the registry. Same crashes as previously reported.

Looking in the registry, I see that

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\netbeans.exe\shell\open\command still has the value “C:\Program Files\Netbeans 7.2\bin\netbean.exe” because I edited it when I installed 7.2. So rather than editing this value, I changed the name of the Netbeans folder from Netbeans 7.2.1 to Netbeans 7.2. Voila! Everything works!

Being unable to resist, I then tried changing the folder name back to Netbeans 7.2.1 and editing the registry value. Back to crashing. So for now, I’m going with making the folder name Netbeans 7.2. But what is going on here?

Xenia,

are you willing to try one more thing? :)

Uninstall 7.2, install 7.2.1 again and try to reproduce (without touching the registry :)

If it's reproducing again, that would be valuable information for the bug you logged.

Solution! Well, sort of … I reverted to Netbeans 7.2 (from 7.2.1) and now everything works as it should.

I did try it. I associated WordPad, and it opened the files, no problem. I then edited the registry as you suggested (so yes, netbeans.exe was listed more than once), and Windows magically fixed it when I tried to open the file again: it opened with WordPad, and when I looked in the registry, there was a new WordPad.exe entry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.php\OpenWithList. So I tried it again, this time with the extra step of using Control Panel -> Folder Options to associate Netbeans with php files. Back to the same old problem.

I love Netbeans, but this really has me stumped … anyway, thanks for your help!

Xenia,

did the WordPad association work? If it was already there, I guess you didn't try what I suggested.

Good luck :)

Unfortunately, it didn’t work. L I can’t make any promises, but goodness knows I would greatly prefer not to touch the registry EVER. Oh, and netbeans.exe was already in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.php\OpenWithList.

Xenia,

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\netbeans.exe\shell\open\command has nothing to do with the file associations.

Try this:
Associate php files with WordPad
Close WordPad
Double click on the .php file under C:\Documents and Settings\xeniak\My Documents\NetBeansProjects\BOCC_Minutes\mail_Notice.php
WordPad should correctly open the file.

If everyting goes well, search in the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.php\OpenWithList
You should have something similar to:
    'WordPad.exe'

You'll want to replace it with
    'netbeans.exe'

If it works, promise to avoid tampering with the registry in the future :)

Regards,
