As far as I know, there's no way to do this. The layout managers are *designed* to not overlap components, that's pretty much all they do. Hence you have to set the layout to null to get overlap, which gets rid of the layout manager.

The picture in your post looks nice, what are you trying to do that involves "overlap?"
