While the is happening the NB auto-complete is not working, but the editor 
still works.  If you are doing a jump, then it does lock
briefly, but it will come back in a few seconds with the option to cancel if 
it hasn't jumped already.

Have you tried Eclipse?  Last I tried Eclipse, it did totally lock the editor 
while it filling out the autocomplete. Very
frustrating. (Sorry, I had to evangelize a bit for Netbeans!)

7.2 is much better, but I have an older machine that is pretty I/O bound, so 
I still need to wait a bit occasionally.
