Thanks for the reply  :D

Throwing an IOException works but the error message looks a little extreme.
Wouldn't it be better to take the call to unregister() out of the save()
method and leave it to the developer to call in the handleSave() method?

I've looked everywhere for the SaveAsAction but can't find it. Also I've
tried creating a SaveCookie that implements SaveAsCapable and adding it to a
dummy Node that I set as the active node on my TopComponent, but nothing
works! Unless I call register on an AbstractSavable none of the save actions
become enabled.

Are there any examples of how to enable the save as button I've already read
these:

https://blogs.oracle.com/geertjan/entry/savecookie
https://blogs.oracle.com/geertjan/entry/savecookie_part_2
https://blogs.oracle.com/geertjan/entry/bye_savecookie_hello_org_netbeans

Many thanks.
