Using Analytics With Your Project

Analytics are statistics about how your project is being used, such as how many hits it gets, how long people stay on your site, and so on. At present, Project Kenai supports Google Analytics. As other kinds of analytic support are added, instructions for those sites will be added to this page. You must be a project administrator to set up analytics for your project. On kenai.com, you set up site analytics for your project on the Analytics tab of your project's Manage page.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free service that provides you with statistics on your web sites, as described in the Google Analytics Tour. To use it, you set up an account, indicate what URL it should get analytics from (http://kenai.com/projects/<projectname>), and copy the tracking code provided into the Analytics tab of your project's Manage page.

Setting Up Google Analytics

  1. If you haven't signed up for Google Analytics, go to the Google Analytics signup page and log in with your Google account.
    Note: If you don't have a Google account, you can sign up for Google by clicking the Sign Up Now link on that page.
  2. After signing in to Google, you see a button to sign up for Google Analytics. Click that button.
  3. Follow the instructions on the page to add the URL. For example, kenai.com/projects/bluebird will work once you add the tracking number to your project.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Enter your contact information, then click Continue.
  6. Read and agree to the Terms of Service, then click Create New Account.
  7. Copy just the tracking code from the tracking script so you can paste it into the Analytics tab on the Manage page for your project on kenai.com.
    For example, from the following script, you would copy only UA-9706181-1:
      <script type="text/javascript">
        var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." : "http://www.");
        document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-analytics.com/ga.js'
        type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
      </script>
      < script type="text/javascript">
        try {
          var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-9706181-1");
          pageTracker._trackPageview();
        } catch(err) {}
      <script>
  8. Click Finish.

Getting an Existing Tracking Code

When you go to your Google Analytics account, on the Analytics Settings page you see your profiles listed. The tracking code for each profile is to the right of the profile URL, as shown in the following figure.

.

Adding a Tracking Code to a Project

To add a tracking code to your project:

  1. On kenai.com, go to your My Page, scroll to the project you want to track, and click Manage.

  2. Click the Analytics tab.

  3. Click Add Analytic.

  4. Choose the type of analytic you are using. Typically for Google, it would be the default, Google Analytics (ga.js).

  5. In the Tracking Number field, paste in the tracking code you copied from Google Analytics, then click Add. You see the new analytic appear, and it is now active.

  6. To see the data, go back to Google Analytics and look at the account you created for this project.
    Note: It can take up to 24 hours for data to appear in your Google Analytics account.
