NetBeans Announces 1,000,000 Active Users

By: geertjan, 27 Jul 2011

The NetBeans Team is proud to announce that, as of this month, the NetBeans IDE has 1,000,000 active users.

"That's not downloads," says John Jullion-Ceccarelli, NetBeans senior manager. "That number represents people who are regularly using NetBeans IDE each month. NetBeans IDE has come a long way.”

Initiated as a student project in the Czech Republic in 1996, NetBeans soon became Sun Microsystems’ flagship Java IDE. As an open source development tool, Sun distributed the IDE for free to promote the growth of the Java platform.

NetBeans IDE has continued to grow from strength to strength as an Oracle sponsored project. "The NetBeans IDE is an important aspect of our investment to support the Java Platform." says Ted Farrell, Chief Architect and senior vice president, Tools and Middleware, Oracle. "Oracle is committed to the continued success and growth of both the NetBeans and the Java communities."

The latest release of the NetBeans IDE is closely aligned with Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE) and is the first tool to provide support for the new features included in Java 7. NetBeans continues to be developed in the Czech Republic, under Oracle's sponsorship.
