"NetBeans has definitely arrived," writes technology analyst Andrew Binstock in a new review for that gives the NetBeans IDE a new edge over Eclipse.

The review compares five features in NetBeans 6.0 and Eclipse 3.3: Out-of-box and Editing experiences, Language Support, Enterprise Tools, and Plugins. Some of the attributes that earned the NetBeans IDE positive points are:

  • Easier installation process
  • Improved and easy to use editing support
  • Increased language support, including excellent editing features that make "NetBeans the best IDE currently available for Ruby development"
  • Bundled plugins that work out-of-the-box, and more
Citing developers' past difficulties with NetBeans, and the subsequent efforts to revamp the IDE and improve its editing features with NetBeans 6.0, Binstock notes that "NetBeans fulfills much of this mandate and has really elevated itself into the same tier as Eclipse. For the first time, serious Java developers have a true choice when it comes to free, open source IDEs."
