NetBeans Edge, Issue 27

The NetBeans.org Open Source Project is proud to announce the availability of NetBeans IDE 5.0, NetBeans Platform 5.0, NetBeans Mobility Pack 5.0 and NetBeans Profiler 5.0.

Click here to download NetBeans 5.0 right away.

NetBeans 5.0 has taken leaps and bounds forward over the past few releases and if you have not tried NetBeans recently now is the time to do so. This is the New NetBeans! To get acquainted with the latest release, take the time to watch a presentation on NetBeans 5.0. It was created during the beta stage but is relevant to the final release you are about to download. You may also want to familarize yourself with the reasons that developers around the world are making the switch to NetBeans.

Two of the innovative and defining features of NetBeans 5.0 are the Matisse GUI Builder and the new support for writing NetBeans modules. You can find a nice tutorial for GUI Building with Matisse in NB5.0 and NetBeans IDE 5.0 Plug-in Module Quick Start Guide in addition to other resources layed out later in the newsletter.

A few more pointers that I would like to highlight are ones that will help you connect with others users and share knowledge. The first and most obvious link is to the NetBeans mailing lists. If you are new or have a question and are not sure where to start, begin with the nbusers mailing list. There is also a hot site on the web called Planet NetBeans, an aggregation of NetBeans blogs where you will always find insights, tips and hints of what's to come in the project.

Last but not least: participate, share, and enjoy the latest NetBeans release and the community that comes with it! Grab a graphic.

NetBeans Platform 5.0

platform - 3kThe NetBeans Platform has been around for years, but NetBeans 5.0 makes module (plug-in) development much easier and smoother than ever before. New project types have been added to NetBeans IDE 5.0 which allows developers to easily extend the NetBeans IDE with modules (plug-ins) or build rich client applications on top of the NetBeans Platform. Note: If you want to build applications on top of the NetBeans Platform, you do not necessarily need to download the NetBeans Platform itself. You can download NetBeans IDE 5.0, develop the application there, and exclude the modules that you do not need.

Extending NetBeans

One of the key features of NetBeans 5.0 is that it has simplified the process of developing modules (plug-ins) using the NetBeans IDE or creating an entirely new application built on the NetBeans Platform. There are currently downloads available from the NetBeans.org AutoUpdate center such as the Developer Collaboration Module. This particular module allows you to chat, share code, and conduct a code review remotely. You can access the AutoUpdate Center directly through the NetBeans IDE.

If you are looking for more modules to extend the IDE then check out NetBeans module catalogue and a new site called nbextras. Both sites allow you to list your module if you are looking for feedback or if you would just like to share your work with others in the true spirit of open source development.

Wallpaper - 9kYou can help NetBeans be successful - which means more people will contribute more ideas, more modules, more bug reports and fixes...which means you get a better IDE and a better Platform! Add NetBeans buttons and banners to your blog, web site or your email signature and help promote NetBeans 5.0 and check out the selection of super cool desktop backgrounds!

But there's more - you can actually see what effect you're having. There's a project called Move the Needle. Each week, the results will be tallied up - we'll process the web logs for the entire site and list your name (or nickname) and how many visitors you sent to NetBeans.org, so you can see exactly how much effect you had! There will also be a tally of how many referring pages came from community sites, as a whole. Making this number bigger is what we call moving the needle.
