Subject: Netbeans redirect during planned downtime for applying patch 10
Importance: High

Hi Gary,
Per our conversation earlier, CN will temporarily redirect the Netbeans.org
site during the planned downtime for the application of patch 10. The hours
to
perform this activity will be charged against Section 3.1.7 of the 2006
Development, Hosting and License Agreement. CN's current estimate on the
number of hours required to perform this activity is approximately 4 hours.
It is critical that Netbeans ensure that the correct personnel are available
as
CN is in the process of performing this activity, both temporarily redirecting
the site and then directing the site back to its original location.
Additionally, CN highly recommends that Netbeans have a method to test the
redirect from outside of Sun as the redirect seems to take a very long time to
propogate with Sun's DNS.
Please confirm our agreement.
Thanks,
Shilpa

I realise there is still no firm times here for the upgrade. I *urgently* need
the exact timeframe when this would happen, pls.------- Additional comments

If you ask us to set the time then we would prefer to do this on Jan8th Monday
10.30AM IST which is Jan 7th Sunday 9PM PST. Please confirm.------- Additional
comments from Jack Catchpoole Fri Jan 5 16:29:04 +0000 2007 -------

The "4 hours" estimate confuses me a bit - the outage itself will still be just
30minutes, correct ? Are you expecting me to provide a tarball of html ?------

Jack, If you need the page redirect to be done for this downtime then the
window needed will be for 4 hours as mentioned in the above mail by Shilpa
and
will be great if you could provide all the neccessary files(tarball of html
pages) to set up this redirection as we did earlier. For the regular patch
application the downtime will be 1/2 hour as usual. Now please confirm the
date
and time which is best suitable for this patch.

Discussed with Jack and explained about this process. He will check internally
and come up with the new schedule. ------- Additional comments from
Sripriya .S Wed Jan 10 09:13:28 +0000 2007 -------

Just to make the points clear again, the actual patch event needs only 1/2
hour
of downtime window of the site, however for the ops engineer to perform the
whole operation(setup apache, configure it and extract tar balls) as such could
take approximatley 4 hours which has been considered as SOW?! hours as Shilpa
mentioned in the above mail.

Jack, any updates on the date and time? Since this will be done in the IST
hours, just thought will let you know in advance that Jan 15th Monday is a
holiday for IST timezone people in CN.

Great, 30 min outage with redirect is much better. As usual, we'd like this to
happen during the US night time, over a weekend. Same time as previously
suggested would be fine - 9pm PST Sunday == 10:30am IST Monday (I think) == 6am
CET. Pls confirm if this works.

Please confirm that *only* DNS records for www will change during the redirect,
so that cvs.netbeans.org will be unaffected, and immediately available again
after the server comes back up, independent of any slowly propagating DNS
changes. Thanks.

I will supply a tgz of html/images for use as the static snapshot.-------

OK, Monday is a holiday, so let's go with 9pm PST Monday == 10:30am IST Tuesday

Talked with Jack and suggested about the diffrent time since the date he
suggested falls on Monday which is going to be holiday in IST timezone. He
will
comfirn with the time again as this patch will be done in IST hours.-------

Sripriya, I've already update this issue with a suggested time, pls confirm.---

oops, mid air collision.

OK, Monday is a holiday, so let's go with 9pm PST Monday == 10:30am IST Tuesday
(I think) == 6am CET.

Will convey this to the internal engineers.

I'm uploading a snapshot of static html here :

http://www.netbeans.org/download/www.netbeans.org-2007-01-12.tgz

NOTE the upload is still running, pls allow say 30minutes for it to complete.
The file is ~129MB in size (134928865).

The file includes /custom_404.html, pls configure Apache to serve that page for
any 404 - it is a msg saying the site is undergoing maintenance, and that some
types of content will be unavailable.

Thanks.
