Space is wasted in toolbar. Fore more space in toolbar please ... 1.) define a new icon for Edit->Replace. Now it's only possible to have a big textual button "Replace". 2.) make the configuration chooser able to resize smaller. ... so that the toolbar has more chance to fit in 1 line on 1024-pixel notebook-screens.
There is an option Small Toolbar icons (popu pmenu over the toolbar free area)
Yes, I know, I use it, but it's not enough, if I also use versioning toolbar, etc.
You can use Customize Toolbar, to customize each toolbar button and/pr create your own group of actions ...

I have added 2 Icons from Notepad++ as example. Don't copy them because of copyright, but look at them for an idea. Can't your button designer create icons for "Find" and "Replace"? As I don't think, that the insertion of an icon could break the stability of the code, I add this to the NetCat issues.

Passing to GUI designers...
CLOSING as I don't think this enhancement is relevant any more due to following: 1) Edit->Replace is not in the toolbar 2) Main toolbar has been made significantly shorter as a result of removing several its items Please correct me and re-open if my understanding is wrong.
For me, a real showstopper is the bad support in sum regarding Find and Replace actions. As I said before: IDE should have standard editor capabilities, as a smartphone should have standard phoning capabilities ;-) Here they are: Issue 141952 "Image for Replace button" Issue 141959 "Missing Find and Replace in Customize Toolbars" Issue 142335 "Can't add 'Replace' to toolbar" Issue 146808 "Wrong scope for "Find" if 2 editor panes open" Issue 146810 ""Find" action not recordable by macro recording" Issue 146818 "Combine "Find", "Replace..." and "Find in Projects" in same dialogue" Issue 148984 "Open searchbar after find actions" Issue 148985 "search context lost for Modify Criteria" Issue 148987 "Provide all possible Find/Replace actions at any context" Issue 148989 "Allow linebreaks, tabs for Find/Replace actions" Considering above issues, especially 141959, this Issue is not obsolete to me. :-(
afaik, it is up to action provider to assign an icon or not to the action. And the Find+Replace actions were considered as ones that not need icon. I personally don't care at all. However there are people in NetBeans team that define what the UI will look like. Sometimes it can happen that their opinion is different than your, Ulf. It is quite normal that the IDE cannot satisfy all the users with all the different opinions... Anyway, reassigning to utilities/search where the issue belongs now. It is not about the Toolsbars space but about the icons
Hehe, I'm afraid to get famous. B-) Lovely summary, I like it. :-) The toolbar argument was from former times, where is was possible by advanced options to add whatever action to the toolbar, but with the constraint, that it will be displayed textual and could need much space, as the text has letters. (today it's also possible by hacking the userdir-settings: E.g. adding .netbeans\6.5rc1\config\Toolbars\Edit\org-openide-actions-ReplaceAction.shadow)
Smily should be 8-)
I'm sorry to be the troublemaker :-), but if this issue is about the new icon, it is duplicate to: Issue 141952 "Image for Replace button" *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 141952 ***
