According to http://developer.apple.com/java/netbeans.html, F11 will compile the current file. However, the Mac intercepts this and show the desktop instead. In general, the UI doc in the help database is often wrong about Mac keyboard shortcuts - sometimes they're guessable. (OSX 10.3.9)
Passing to Milos and ccing Patrick, so that UI doc in the help database could be fixed as well. rossentj, could you name errors you found in mentioned html document? Thanks in advance.
I haven't checked everything on the HTML page. The intent of my additional comment below was that the keyboard shortcuts in the Netbeans help database seem to be based entirely on Windows and that in some cases the correct keystrokes for the Mac can be guessed at. I would suggest that instead of reworking the entire help database, a section should be created for each distinct environment, including OSX, which would detail all the UI differences from the default.
I filed issue 59080 to deal with the docs part of the issue.
not only F11, but also F9 needs a different shortcut. #65402 is a duplicate of this one.

reassigning to HIE to decide what the macos shortcuts should be.
Thanks for reporting this issue. I agree that something should happen with shortcuts on Mac platform; it is bad OOBE. But it is too late for changing the shortcuts for 5.0, so I'm changing the milestone to promo G. I'm also going to file 1-pager for this issue so this issue will not be forgotten - changing this issue to Enhancement. For this time I just can give you an advice: go to System Preferences... | Dashboards&Exposé or Keyboard&Mouse and make the Exposé (F9) and Desktop (F11) inactive or change the shortcuts.
Reassigning to jrojcek.
